Ooooooooooh my heart!!

Okay, first up: LIBRARIANS ARE AMAZING AND DESERVE SO MUCH LOVE.

Second of all: y'all need to not tag this with lesbian. K, thanks.

Valerie, Valerie, Valerie. I wish I could hug you, sweet child.

I grew up sort of religious, but nothing this level. American Evangelism takes things to the next level. And I feel for this - it is abuse and no one deserves that.

The story was one of hope, one of finding yourself, and being accurate to yourself even when everyone else is trying to put you down, put you into a box, and make your existence as miserable as possible. All in the name of "god".

Valerie's spirit never breaks, though, and this kid. This kid! She goes through so much. And it's only from reading - the power of books, I declare you! that she realises her animation, the way she is treated, and how her existence

Pray the Gay Away: The Remarkable Lives of Bible Belt Gays

Barton argues that conventional Southern manners and religious institutions provide a foundation for homophobia in the Bible Belt

In the Bible Belt, it’s common to see bumper stickers that claim One Man + One Woman = Marriage, church billboards that command one to “Get right with Jesus,” letters to the editor comparing same-sex attracted marriage to marrying one’s mutt, and nightly news about homophobic attacks from the Family Foundation. While some areas of the Unites States have made tremendous progress in securing rights for gay people, Bible Belt states lag behind. Not only accomplish most Bible Belt gays lack domestic partner benefits, lesbians and gay men can still be fired from some places of employment in many regions of the Bible Belt for existence a homosexual.

In Pray the Gay Away, Bernadette Barton argues that conventions of small town life, rules which govern Southern manners, and the power wielded by Christian institutions serve as a foundation for both passive and active homophobia in the Bible Belt. She explores how conservative Christian i

Pray the gay away: cull conversion therapy worldwide

We are marking each day in the week primary up to London Pride with a blog highlighting Homosexual issues from place and abroad.

Germany recently declared it will make it illegal for people to practise conversion therapy, should the UK do the same?

Whilst Pride is a time to celebrate, not everyone feels able to do so. There are people across the world, including in the UK, going through conversion therapy also recognizable as reparative treatment. The aim is to ‘cure’ someone of homosexuality and ‘make them straight’ as being same-sex attracted is seen as an ‘illness’. People are told to ‘pray the queer away’. This is shocking, but sadly still happening. Positively some countries, most recently Germany, will ban this treatment, but it is clear that further work needs to take place.

What is conversion therapy?

Unfortunately there is still stigma attached to creature gay in some communities. This can lead to individuals feeling ashamed and guilty about their sexuality and unable to live openly. Some people voluntarily engage in conversion therapy whilst others are pressured into it by family me

Abstract

In the United States, gay conversion therapy (GCT) has not been banned nationally, although twenty states have issued laws banning therapists from practicing it. While the Supreme Court has refused to overhear several cases involving challenges to laws banning GCT, recently the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals set up a local law banning the practice as an unconstitutional regulation on the First Amendment right of speech. This ruling disappointingly confuses ideas of First Amendment protections with what amounts to psychological torture of our youth. It must be noted that while bans on GCT have been successfully upheld as constitutional in other regions, the laws only ban the practice for licensed therapists, not for clergy or any other religiously affiliated organization who wish to use the practice on the youth. This distinction will be discussed later.
