    THE BRITISH common will soon be free to contact a police horse gay, insult Scientology or growl at a dog without fear of prosecution, after Home Secretary Theresa May announced a fundamental transform to the Common Order Act.

    Section 5 of the execute allowed the police and courts to determine what is insulting. It will now be amended in what campaigners have called a victory for free speech, The Guardian reports.

    The act, which covers both the spoken and written word, will be altered so that a person can only be establish guilty of an offence if they use threatening or abusive words or behaviour. No longer will "insulting" words or behaviour be covered.

    I also am old enough to have watched the 100% turnaround in social attitudes towards gays, and reflecting on that is one of the those things that offer me hope for the human race :).

    I had a lot of gay friends in college and after in the 1980s, mostly women, and while they were out in their immediate social circle, it was clearly something they had to maintain on the downlow at serve and with landlords and even some with parents. This was in a generally liberal and progressive city, but with a conservative exurb/hinterland, and obviously anyone over 40 would have remembered when being gay was a criminal offense.

    The change to now is just amazing. I instruct at a college in the more conservative rural exurbs, and even over the past decade I have seen my successive generations of students more and more able to show themselves and be themselves, and acquire acceptance from their peers. I’m sure things aren’t perfect for them, and obviously I’m not in a position to recognize if they get some pushback from family and peers. But from how they express themselves, I can see that they live in a much more accepting world.
