Gay pizza philadelphia

With its somewhat-Spartan and sometimes low-key aesthetic, at first glance you might believe Bufad Pizza, 1240 Spring Garden St., is just another place to snatch a piece of gourmet wood-fired pizza. But there is also some surprisingly nice, refined dining to be found.

There’s no finer example of the adventurous nature of Bufad’s menu than its antipasti plate ($13), a family-style plate of local seasonal bites that reflects whatever catches the kitchen’s fancy.

When we visited, this menagerie included a potato and picked apple salad (which they would really make a mint on if they started selling in bulk. It’s about to be cookout season, please earn on that), a salty egg, chicken liver crostini, farro and herb salad and pecorino toscano. The egg, comfortably somewhere between soft- and hard-boiled, was wonderfully briny thanks to a sliver of anchovy topping it. The chicken liver crostini was silky and rich with the sweetness of a balsamic reduction.

On the small-plate menu, the burrata ($12) stood out, with a complex array of textures and flavors that somehow start a way to operate together. The crunch of the sautéed asparagus and the roasted pine nuts counterbalanced the crea

Gay Pizza Reopening

In June, we reported the the infamous gayborhood landmark, Gay Pizza, closed their doors. Many were obviously upset as this was the go-to hot spot for post nightclub meal after an evening in the gayborhood.

We are ecstatic to announce that Gay Pizza is reopening – (209 S. 13th St. across the lane from Woody's)

The two brothers that own the cigar shop next door, Andrew and Mike Cappelli have decided to reopen the space.

"We are changing the specify to Pizzeria Cappelli." said owner Andrew Cappelli, "We own no problem with the nicknames the [community] has given the pizza shop and welcome the names to stay"

There will be a soft opening tonight Friday August 21, and Saturday August 22 starting at 10pm (until 4am) and they will provide a simular menu.

Their official opening with be Wednesday August 26.

We will post more facts when we obtain it.

Gayborhood residents and visitors got a late-night treat last weekend.

Brothers Andrew and Michael Cappelli dished out 200 free slices Friday and Saturday nights to identify the soft opening of their Pizzeria Cappelli, 209 S. 13th St., which celebrates its grand opening this weekend.

The new eatery is operating in the space of the defunct 13th Avenue Gourmet Pizza, recognizable to locals as “Gay Pizza.” Licenses & Inspections cover the shop down abruptly in behind June for not having paid licensing fees.

The new owners, who operate Cappelli Brothers Cigar Corporation next to the shop, were eager to preserve the longtime Gayborhood store.

“It’s been a staple of the neighborhood and, after it went out of business, we were forced to see a lot of people walk by yelling and screaming that they couldn’t get late-night pizza,” Andrew Cappelli said. “It’s been a really important part of the neighborhood for 10 years so it was an obvious option to keep it open.”

Andrew said both he and his brother have an extensive amount of experience in the food-service industry, from dishwashing in lofty school to cooking in college to managing bars.

L&I Shuts Down “Gay Pizza” on 13th Street

Here’s why we can’t acquire anything nice (although I never really found the affectionately named Homo Hut “nice,” so to speak): The popular late-night “Gay Pizza” restaurant, located at 209 South 13th Street, has been seal down by the city’s Department of Licenses and Inspections.

The “Cease Operations/Stop Work Order” sign is clearly displayed on the door of the shop, indicating that the location had “no sustenance license,” and that the “corrective actions needed to remove this condition” are to “obtain food license #3120, Food Prep.”

I spoke with Ron Spencer in L&I this morning who confirmed that the license expired in April of this year. However, according to his records, it appears that the pizza restaurant may have had no license from 2007 to 2014.

We’ve called “Homo Hut” several times to get their response and there’s been no answer. We’ll hold you updated should more facts become available.
