Who’s boycotting Twitter/X and Tesla?

By

Here we consider why Twitter is being boycotted by advertisers and some individuals, emerging calls to boycott Tesla, and the demise of Twitter as a tool for campaigning and journalism.

It’s hard to perceive whether to encourage X/Twitter's downfall or rail against it.

How Musk changed Twitter

While Twitter has a long history of criticism for misinformation and toxicity, it seems to contain grown significantly since Elon Musk's takeover.

Key changes Musk implemented that campaigners declare have caused an increase in loathe speech and misinformation include:

  • Cutting staff by 80%, including many moderator roles.
  • Removing the ability of users to report ‘misleading information’.
  • Reinstating over 1,100 previously banned accounts, including Donald Trump and Tommy Robinson (real name Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon).
  • Making the ‘blue tick’ main attraction, which used to only be accessible to ‘notable people’ such as politicians, celebrities, experts or journalists, a pay-for feature meaning that far more people can be ‘verified’, making it harder to distinguish which accounts are publishing credible informatio

Tom Holland trends on Twitter with 96,000 tweets for gay sex scene from The Crowded Room, fans are worried for Zendaya

A clip of Tom Holland from his new series The Crowded Room is going viral on Twitter. The actor is trending with more than 96,000 tweets mentioning him and a sex scene that he performed with another male actor. Of course, his fans are going feral after seeing their favourite Spider-Man in a never-before-seen avatar.

The Apple TV series The Crowded Room is inspired by the story of Billy Milligan, the first person acquitted of a crime due to dissociative identity disorder. The Apple TV series also stars Amanda Seyfried, Emmy Rossum, and Sasha Lane. It follows Tom's character who is arrested following a shooting at Rockefeller in 1979.

The clip shows Tom's Danny surfing through a lgbtq+ club in a black blouse and pants, with his eyes doused in kohl. After sharing the dance floor with a man, they hit the toilet for some steamy sex. Another clip shows him dancing in a room while high on drugs and then engaging in oral sex with the matching man.

Clearly, it has all been too much for his fans to handle. Most are also worried about his girlfriend Zendaya, making memes a

    • Twitter is appearing to limit the visibility of tweets that include terms to describe gender identity and sexual orientation.
    • In DMs, tweets with the words "gay," "queer," and "trans" showed up as URLs; others populated into an easier-to-read format.
    • The relocate could be a departure for Elon Musk, who often criticizes social media content moderation and censorship.

Twitter appears to be making it more challenging to see specific tweets sent via blunt message.

The apparent quirk was first spotted by Twitter users who said the company had made it more tough to view tweets sent by guide message that narrate sexual orientation and gender identity.

Elon Musk flaunts Tesla’s ideal score on LGBTQ equality index, saying his corporation respects ‘personal choices’

“Tesla scores 100/100 for the 7th year in a row for LGBTQ equality,” Musk tweeted, linking to the latest Corporate Equality Index (CEI) from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), an LGBTQ advocacy group based in Washington, D.C.

The CEI ranks over 1,200 businesses, including all Fortune 500 companies, by their implementation of and vow to policies for LGBTQ equality, awarding each business a score out of 100 based on HRC’s own metrics, such as whether the company has introduced a nondiscrimination policy for LGBTQ issues or offers health policies that cover “domestic and civil partnerships.”

Yet Musk’s follow-up tweet appears to misalign with Tesla’s apparent engagement to LGBTQ equality.

“We are trying to accelerate sustainable energy, so what matters is how much someone can contribute to that goal,” Musk said. “Personal choices are your own and are respected.”

Need it be said, sexual orientation is not a “personal choice.” But, based on Musk’s previous tussles with the HRC, the Tesla executive’s comment might have more to carry out with gender identity (wh
