Love, Simon (2018)

If it feels a bit like a CW version of an after-school particular, that's no mistake: Teen-tv super-producer Greg Berlanti makes his feature-film directorial debut here. It's as chaste a love story as you're likely to watch in the 21st century—the hunky gardener who makes the title teen doubt his sexuality is wearing a long-sleeved shirt, for God’s sake—but you understand what? The queer kids of the future deserve their wholesome entertainment, too.

A gay fantasia on Elton themes. An Elton John biopic was never going to be understated, but this glittering jukebox musical goes way over the top and then keeps going. It might be an overcorrection from the straight-washing of the previous year's Bohemian Rhapsody, but when it's this much fun, it's best not to overthink it.

A charming Irish movie that answers the question: "What if John Hughes were Irish and gay?" Misfit Ned struggles at a rugby-obsessed boarding school until a mysterious new kid moves in and an unlikely fri

Gay cruising and its geography in cinema and documentary

The thought for this list grew out of discussions after I rewatched Goodbye, Dragon Inn (2003) and a idea from David Conner.  My interest is in films where cruising forms part of the plot (rather than just incidental background), with a particular interest where the film focuses on the geography or architecture where the cruising occurs, in addition to the rituals of cruising.  Films are listed alphabetically.

I have not included narrative films/documentaries where the cruising happens in the context of sex operate or hustling.  Gary Needham is curating a great list for those films at Movie Trade: Hustlers and Male Sex Work in Cinema and Documentary.  Acknowledging that cruising has moved online for many men, I have not included films about online cruising, which require a seperate list.

The list is a work in progress and suggested additions via replies are very welcome.  Cruising is a familiar theme in same-sex attracted porn, most of which will not be indexed on Letterboxd (Note: This was changed from August 2021.). I am adding these films/documentaries in the replies area in my Goodbye, Dragon Inn review (it should be adjacent the top)

The best LGBTQ+ movies of all time

With the aid of leading directors, actors, writers and activists, we count down the most essential LGBTQ+ films of all time

Like queer tradition itself, queer cinema is not a monolith. For a drawn-out time, though, that’s certainly how it felt. In the past, if gay lives and issues were ever portrayed at all on screen, it was typically from the perspective of alabaster , cisgendered men. But as more opportunities have opened up for queer performers and filmmakers to tell their own stories, the scope of the LGBTQ+ experiences that have made their way onto the screen has gradually widened to more frequently contain the trans community and lgbtq+ people of colour.

It’s still not perfect, of course. In Hollywood, as in society at enormous, there are many barriers left to breach and ceilings to shatter. But those recent strides deserve to be celebrated – as do the bold films made long before the mainstream was willing to accept them. To that end, we enlisted some LGBTQ+ cultural pioneers, as well as Time Out writers to assist in assembling a list of the greatest male lover films ever made.

Best Gay Shorts [and Where to See Them]

There are so many gay-themed concise films out there, but many of them are a waste of second, either because the filmmaking is shoddy or the storytelling is dated. [That said, there are short films made shoddily that go beyond their flaws and become camp. And there are dated films that turn into significant because they are great reflections of the times they were made in. So all these is adorable subjective, if you ask me.]

I decided to put together an alphabetical list of gay compact films I've loved/liked/appreciated for some reason, all of them at least I've ⭑⭑½-starred. [This rating is above average for me.]

For my purposes, this is a list of narrative/fictional brief films, but experimental short films are also included. However, to keep the list manageable, I've decided not to include short subject documentaries [with some special exceptions] and lesbian short films [also with one special exception]. I am also not including titles I've not seen, so this is lovely much a curated list. [Suggestions, however, will be highly appreciated in the comments.] I hold included all Iris Prize winners here, regardless of sexuality or genre.
