John Whaite was reduced to tears as he recalled his school teacher trip him as homosexual to his family before he was ready.
Before performing his Couple's Choice routine to Adele's 'Hometown Glory' with professional dance partner Johannes Radebe during the 'Strictly Come Dancing' semi-final on Saturday night (11.12.21), the former 'Great British Bake Off' winner shared the heartbreaking story in a pre-recorded segment about his upbringing in Wigan, Lancashire, North England.
He explained: "Johannes and I are dancing our Couple's Choice.
"I grew up on a farm just outside of Wigan in Lancashire. In the morning I would receive up, feed the calves and then go to academy. I'm very grateful for the upbringing that I've had.
He said: "My family and I are so close."
His sister Jane said: "When we were younger, he was just like the average little brother. It's amazing really that John would finish up on the television."
John was bullied for being "camp" and is thankful to his siblings for "fighting" his corner.

We cannot be gleeful 100% of the time and it seems we stay in an age which, finally, acknowledges that.
The self-care movement, though often highjacked by companies to sell scented candles and joy-inducing bubble baths, at its core recognises that very fact: live in the moment and hug whatever feeling washes over you at one specific moment.
Constant, unwavering, unbridled, effervescent, sickly happiness is indeed an overstretch, but what any human organism needs to perceive as often as possible is simply safety.
A sense of safety comes from being psychologically validated by those around you – family, guardians and friends. It’s a feeling that is built slowly on reliable foundations of believe and loyalty. For many children, whose family lives are turbulent, teachers in school can be the fortifying coerce that is needed.
In year 9, I opened up to my head of year that I was gay. It took me an hour, sat in a classroom in the English block, to say the words. In proof, I didn’t declare the words at all.
