Saunas in Portugal are not as common as one would expect, however, the relatively few saunas you discover in Lisbon and Porto are clean and safe, even if they are not as big as some found in other cities of comparable size in Europe. Most saunas are very popular on Sunday afternoons, especially off-season (i.e. when it's not beach weather!) It is very rare to find rent boys (prostitutes) functional in the saunas so, if you do encounter one, he will certainly explain that he is for hire before he gets you too excited.
