Barcelona Gay Guide

Gayxample, Barcelona’s Gay District

Barcelona’s iconic queer district is commonly referred to as Gaixample, a merge of the Catalan words “gai” (gay) and “Eixample” (the name of the city’s central district). However, the English-influenced spelling Gayxample is also widely used, especially in tourist and international contexts.
Gayxample was born in the 1990s with the soar of numerous Homosexual bars, clubs, and businesses. A symbol of tolerance and diversity, it attracts both locals and tourists with its cosmopolitan and festive atmosphere. Today, it is recognized as one of the best gay neighborhoods in Europe, reflecting Barcelona’s inclusive and modern spirit.

Whilst known as Barcelona’s only nudist beach, Mar Bella attracts as many gay sunbathers who select to keep that tackle undercover as those who are joyful to let it all dangle out.  This is usually the most popular ‘gay’ beach but it is also the furthest from the city centre.

Located right next to Mar Bella beach is “El Chiringay de la Mar Bella”, an iconic bar & restaurant has become internationally renowned as the focal point of homosexual beach life in Barcelona. The restaurant bids a decent range of bright dishes, salads, hot baguettes and a selection of more substantial main dishes.  The bar bids a great choice of cocktails, protein shakes and juices.  During the evening, the bar plays host to many events throughout the summer months.

How to receive there

You will either need to take a taxi or the Metro to Poble Nou or Selva De Mar (Yellow Line – L4) and then stride for about 20 minutes.  Alternatively, catch bus 41 and alight at Parc esportiu de la Mar Bella. Last updated:07-16-2018

Barcelona is widely recognizable as one of the most gay-friendly cities in Europe, attracting tens of thousands of LGBT tourists every year. Given its coastal location and year-round climate, its hardly surprising that out of 4km of beaches, more than one has get known as ‘Barcelonas gay beach.’

In evidence, both gay locals and tourists to Barcelona are spoilt for choice. Barcelona has no less than 3 queer beaches (with one being very extended and technically three in one!). Barcelonas gay beaches possess also been deemed blue flag beaches, awarded for their high levels of cleanliness, environmental standards, safety and facilities.

One of the biggest selling points is how easily usable the gay beaches are, right on the city’s doorstep. You can easily reach the lgbtq+ beaches in Barcelona using the affordable public transport regardless of the neighbourhood you are staying in. In proof, one of the things that we loved most when we visited was that we didn’t have to elect between a town sightseeing break or a beach holiday – Barcelona combines the best of both!
